Well, Jarre's music is my first favourite, of course, as well as Geiss, Rimbert, Rondat, TK, and anyone else that worked with Jarre, but to follow in order of preference, my list follows:
Barenaked Ladies, They Might Be Giants, "Weird Al" Yankovic, The Decemberists, Carbon Leaf, Weezer, 3 Doors Down, Neil Diamond, Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, The Postal Service, and some others I can't think up right now. These last few I don't listen to very often, but I love their music. *A newcomer to this list is Safri Duo, thanks to seeing them in the Aalborg video (I didn't know they were percussionists before then). I have yet to get any of their CD's, however, so they have not been properly placed in the list.

Hugely into Peter Gabriel. You need to give some of his soundtracks airtime, Long Walk Home, Passion and Birdy. If you can get hold of Ovo there is some amazing work on there. I saw the Millennium show twice before I realised Gabriel was the composer.
Mark Shreeve, Mid year Tangerine Dream (Haslinger years esp). Vangelis Soundtracks (Chariots of Fire/Bladerunner) When I want to be cultured - Tomita (Planet Suite is awesome) Also been listening to Alex Storer's work (he is on hereand is producing some nice work) And Meesha as well. And lots and lots of Oxygene and Equinoxe. Nice thread P

I listen to Jarre, of course, I also listen to FC Kahuna, Gorillaz and the Fourplay String Quartet. I particularly like the quartet because they electrify their instruments, they can make violins sound like electric guitars, sitars, in one song, clarinets!
And the best part is, they're local, I'm actually friends with a couple of the guys.

My tastes are fairly broad I guess:
Instrumental/New Age Mike Oldfield (wonders whether Music of the Spheres will be renamed Tubular Bells IV?) Kitaro (What ever happened to Kitaro?) Larry Fast / Synergy (His 1978 album CORDS is as good as Equinoxe) Vangelis (Pull the finger out, V, and remember you are a human, not a bleedin Greek God!) Chicane (I wish I could replicate there soaring strings...) Tangerine Dream (from 1969 to 1988, everything after this is worthless, despicable and not worthy of the acclaim it somehow gets) Enya (before I realised what a repetitve money grabbing perosn she really is!) Deep Forest (there self titled first album is a must buy for every JMJ fan) Mainstream Pink Floyd (Dark Side of the Moon, Greatest album ever) Coldplay (so shoot me..I love ColdPlay) David Gray (Seen him 3 times live, the guys a genius) David Kitt (The Big Romance shows what can be done with a little equipment and a lot of songwriting skill) Crowded House (who doesn't love these guys?) U2 (to an extent) Early O.M.D (Architecture and Morality is a classic of electronic music) Classical: Henry Gorecki (His Symphony of Sorrowful Songs is the greatest piece of music ever) Erik Satie (Gymnopedies is the Melody of Melodies) Samuel Barber (Marvelous composer for strings) Philip Glass (Mr prolific, not always on the mark but I love him anyway...Glass Engine is the best thing on the web)

When I was younger (in the 80's and 90's) i almost only listened to instrumental synth music - Jarre, Vangelis, and some Kitaro etc. Over the years, that has changed, as my musical tastes have changed.
Here's what I listen to these days, i rough order of how often it is in my mp3 player: - Lunik (Great Swiss pop band - discovered them through Delerium where Lunik's vocalist, Jaėl sings on one of their songs. I just love Lunik! Check out their songs "Through Your Eyes", "Bad Timing", "Fall", "Slide", or "Let Go", and you'll se what I mean) - MiNa (The two main members of Lunik, more acoustic sound and slower tempo than Lunik, otherwise quite similar and great music) - Loreena McKennitt (mmmm, "Nights of the Alhambra") - Dido (looking forward to the 3rd album as the first two were great) - Delerium (some is great, some is not so great, but exciting and unique music) - Within Temptation (especially the album "The silent force") - Evanescence (great music in the autumn) - Mike Oldfield ("Tubular Bells II" and "-III") - Enya (at least "Watermark", "Shepherd Moons" and parts of the other albums, but I don't listen much to Enya anymore) - Kitaro (the best album, "Oasis" is almost up to the level of Oxygene/Equinoxe, but not quite there) - Vangelis (I hardly ever listen to Vangelis anymore) And, of course, Jean Michel Jarre, who has been a mainstay in my playlists for the last 22 years. ![]() So there you have it. Almost everything from pop (or, some of it is more in the genre of "Adult contemporary" than "bubblegum pop" ) to New Age, World Music, to darker more "Gothic" rock for those dark, rainy autumn nights. |
